Malcolm West
Bio
Professional artist since Sept 1979.
I’ve been making sculptures since mid 80’s, with a period from 1992 - 2002 scene painting.
2002 to present day producing figurative sculptures on a full time basis. ~
My work is inspired by dance and Greek mythology. I endeavour to capture grace, elegance, beauty and movement in my work. I have been working on the theme of Icarus for two decades.
This sculpture is the 8th in the series. All different. They are inspired by our disregard of warnings about global warming. As Icarus was warned not to fly too near the sun. We, like him, ignore warning. We are also in the moment of our feathers falling out.
I work with dancers (being a dancer myself). With ‘Freestyle with Attitude’ I am trying to express that feeling of joy and freedom you experience when dancing. The position this dancer is in is called ‘Altitude’. Here I am giving a double meaning- position and expressing an attitude of freedom.
