Alex Relph
Bio
Alex Relph is a British sculptor working from Frome, Somerset.
While he is best known for large-scale sculptures created for gardens and outdoor spaces, his recent work has shifted toward smaller, more intimate pieces designed for interiors. His practice centres on an exploration of shape, space, and movement. Through the formal language of line and form, he creates abstract works that subtly evoke the human figure, suggesting gesture, emotion, and presence without direct representation. Material and process are fundamental to his approach. Relph’s sculptures emerge through the physical manipulation of steel—cutting, bending, welding, and 3refining through continual addition and subtraction. He often assembles collections of steel elements, allowing the work to evolve organically in response to the material’s inherent qualities. By bringing together contrasting components, he gradually resolves them into cohesive, balanced compositions. Spontaneity plays an important role, but it is carefully moderated by intention. The immediacy of expression in each piece is supported by thoughtful structure and deliberate decision-making. In addition to steel, Relph incorporates metals such as zinc, bronze, and brass. Surface treatments and patination both protect and enrich the work, enhancing depth, unity, and visual impact.
He exhibits widely across the UK and has recently shown with Andelli Art, Morwood Art, Kobi and Teal, and Rachel Bebb Contemporary. His work has also featured in award-winning gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
